Seniors Annual Prizegiving

The Seniors organised a Texas Scramble with a shotgun start on Monday 04th December to take place before their Annual Prizegiving. Unfortunately the inclement weather forced the North side to close again and due to a number of cancellations teams had to be hastily re arranged to accommodate the 8 groups who were brave enough to venture out and play the South side twice.

As anticipated all players got a good soaking but that wasn’t enough to put them off and all groups finished their rounds and coming in with the best score was the team of Ian Norris, Gerry Lozach and Phil Slater.

Tony Boyd Knight presented the Trophies to the main winners which saw Bill Dempsey collect the Most Consistent award along with the Gorvel Trophy and Martin De Gruchy receive the most improved award along with the Elizabeth Bowl Eclectic Trophy. Frank Booth (absent) was the winner of the Alice Trophy K.O. competition having defeated Peter Roscouet in the Final however, Peter won the Angelo Palomba trophy which was a bright red Ferrari, unfortunately only a model. Ian Norris collected the Jack A’Court League Trophy and Franco Vedovatti received the Hutchings League Trophy .Peter Simon now holds the Tony Sartin Trophy which had been beautifully carved by Roger Harris. The biggest round of applause of the day was received by Mick Le Brocq when presented with the Wooden Spoon (Biggest Stirrer) trophy.

Les Mielles are Hampshire Sevens champions

Les Mielles travelled to Lee-On-The-Solent Golf Club in Hampshire on September 23rd to take part in the finals day for the County Sevens title.
Their semi-final match was against Waterlooville GC who also reached this stage last year. Harry Singleton was playing Seb Lowe playing of 3hcp, but was always in control of his match with his solid form and took the match 4&3. James O'Hara seemed in control of his match being two up after the front but then lost four holes in a row to find himself in trouble. James dug in and won the next three holes to go down the 18th one up and after finding the green in regulation, holed a 20ft putt to win the match. Bringing up the rear was our leader for the weekend Allan Lawson who couldnt find his top form but his short game excellence always kept him in front and he pulled away on the back nine to win 4&3. This left the overall match all square with Steve Inman still playing. This was a tight game all morning and there was nothing to seperate them over 18 holes which led to an extra hole to decide the match. Steve drilled his tee shot down the middle of the fairway and with his opponent finding the creek, he was looking good to seal the match. His opponent then went onto to hit a tree branch on his approach and still couldnt find the green with this next shot. Steve played a lovely six iron to the middle of the green and the point was then conceded when waterloovilles chip went long, giving the match to Les Mielles.

After a quick lunch, the team went out to take on New Forest, the second oldest team in Hampshire, in the final. This turned out to be a close match overall with one side looking to be ahead, only for the other team to look favourites a few holes later. Harry continued his good form but found a determined player in Andy Hales who wouldnt go away and this match went all the way to 18th hole which Harry won and gave Les Mielles their first point. This was soon followed by Peter who playing against 1hcp Jackson Ainley, found himself quickly four down in his match. Back came Peter who managed to sqaure up the match and take it down the 19th where he boomed a drive and hit the green with his second then two putted to win another point. Peter Dixon lost a close match to Steve Holland and Gareth also lost a close match with his opponent pulling away on the back nine. Allan Lawson found his game in the final and proved to strong for Gavin Lockley to win his match 4&3 and give Les Mielles an overall lead of 3-2. James O'Hara was playing some great golf but his opponent was a gritty player and always stayed close. Down the stretch, James managed to build a lead to go dormie 3 and on the 17th, he halved the hole to win the point and give Les Mielles victory in the final.

A brilliant final and full credit to New Forest GC who played the match as it should be, hard but with great sportmanship.

Shout out to all the other players and captains who couldnt make the final but played their part along the way that led to this victory.

Les Mielles first 7s win and now the plans start on retaining it :)

Les Mielles win 7s CI Final

Les Mielles took on St Pierre Park at our home course on Sunday 27th and came out on top to progress to the semi-finals / Final in Hampshire.

Here's how the matches went on the day.

Peter Roscouet (9) continued the trend of leading us out and was up against Ross Haines(4). In a tight game, Peter lost the first hole and then went onto halving the next 7 holes before losing the 9th to be 2 down. Peter then won the next five holes to build a 3 shot lead only for Ross to reduce it to two on the 16th. With the match dormie 2, a half on the 17th resulted in Peter winning the match 2&1.

In match 2, Steve Inman (15) was making his 7s debut this year and was playing against Lawrence (9). Steve soon found himself one down after the first hole but bounced back on the second with a birdie to level the match and settle into the game. Steve then used his shots wisely to open up a big lead over the front 9 and with both players halving the 13th, they shook hands with Steve taking the point with a 5&4 win.

Daniel Brannan (13) was up next and he found himself two up through seven then lost the next two holes to birdie, leaving them all square at the half way point. Danny then lost the next three holes but bounced back by winning the 13th and 14th to leave himself only 1 behind. The remaining holes were all halved giving St Pierre Park their first point.

Match 4 saw Richard Wilson (15) play against St Pierre's John Riley (15). The front nine saw both players win alternate holes with there only being a few halves along the way, leading to Richard being 1 down at the half-way point. The trend continued on the back nine until they played the 13th / 14th hole where Richard won both holes to take control of the match. Back came John who won the 16th and needing a birdie on the last to take the match to the 19th, drained a 12ft putt to get the match back to A/S. The match continued up the 19th and 20th and with news filtering back the Les Mielles had won the match, they shook hand and called the match a draw.

Allan Lawson (13) took on Thomas Muir (14) in match 5. Allan built up a healthy lead early on with Thomas finding the wind tough to deal and they crossed the car park with Allan 5up. Allan made it 6up on the 11th and both players seemed to have crossed the hazard on the twelfth, only for Allan to find his in the rough but no sign of Thomas ball. The hole was conceded giving Allan a 7&6 victory.

In match 6 we had Bobby Stirling (6) trying to continue his magic from the Jersey final, playing against Martin Ireland (7). Each player won a hole in the first two holes before Bobby found his rhythm to win the 6th, 7th and 8th to reach teh mid point 3 up. Martin pullled one back on the 10th only for Bobby to restore his three shot cushion by birding the 12th. Martin wasnt going down without a fight and won the 14th and 16th to take the match to the 18th where Bobby put his approach into the water and Martin got his par to take the match to extra holes. Both players ended up on the 19th green with a par putt to try and seel the game. Martin putted first and found the bottom of the up from 10ft putt and with Bobby missing his putt, this gave St Pierre another point.

The final match of day was between James O'Hara (9) and Zac Hannis (4). Zac won the first hole but James clawed his way back and then went on to win hole four through to 7 to open up a four shot lead, which he kept till the 10th. Zac played some great golf on the back 9 which saw him 1 over gross winning the 10th, 13th and 16th with a great birdie to close the match to 1 shot. At this point the overall score was 3-1 with the other two matches heading to the 19th so this felt like a big moment in the match. Both players parred the 17th to take the match to the 18th with James still 1 up. Both found the green in regulation and James was first to putt for the match and his putt looked good all the way but just rolled past the left edge. Zac now had the chance to win the hole and hit a great putt down hill that was tracking all the way but came up a few inches short. James mopped up his return putt to win the game 1up and secure the match to Les Mielles.

Another great match to watch and full credit to St Pierre Park who fully played their part and in a sportingly manner.

Les Mielles now head to Lee-On-The-Solent GC in Hampshire on September 24th where they will meet Waterlooville GC in the semi-finals.

7s Jersey Final

Les Mielles travelled up to La Moye to take on a strong side on their home course with the wind and rain constant, but the team dug in to come out on top in what was a great match.

First out was Peter Roscouet (9) who was up against ex-les mielles player Simon Allchin (1). A close front nine saw Peter trailing by two, which soon turned to three on the 10th. Peter won the 11th and 12th to close the score and just missed his putt on the 13th to get it back to all square. Simon bounced back by winning the 14th and then won the match on 16 for a 3&2 win.

Next up was Harry Singleton (9) playing against Charlie Kiberd (2). Charlie won the 4th and Harry responded by winning the 5th but Harry got his nose in front on the 7th with both players scoring a birdie with Harry getting a shot. Harry took control of the match winning the 10th and 11th but Charlie fought back to 2 down over the next few holes. Harry won the 15th to go dormie 3 but Charlie wasnt going down without a fight, birding 16 to take it down the 17th. Charlie got another birdie on 17 but with Harry getting a shot his par was good to win the match 2&1.

Matt Cooper (9) was the 3rd match versus La Moye's Paul Banahan (4). A number of pars saw Matt 1up after four holes but Paul won the 5th to take it back to A/S. Paul then birdied 8 for the hole but Matt responded with his own birdie on 9 to cross over A/S. Matt found his groove on the back nine with four straight pairs giving him a three shot lead but Paul came back at him winning both 15 and 16 to reduce the lead to one. With a shot on the 17th, Matts par was good enough for the hole and sealed the point 2&1.

Allan Lawson (15) took on another ex-les mielles player Paul Horgan (4). The match was tight early on with Paul taking the lead on the long 5th with a par but Allan came back strongly winning 8 and 9 to cross halfway 1up. Paul got it back to A/S on the 11th and the match remained locked until the par 5 16th where Paul was green side in 2 and Allan had found some sand trouble to give the hole to Paul. A great up and down from Paul kept him 1 up on the 17th and he showed all his 7s experience to get on to 18th green in two and win the match 2up.

Match 5 saw Richard Wilson (15) taking on Chris Vibert(6). The match was A/S after 2 but Chris then won the next three holes to surge ahead. Richard dug in to win three of the next four holes to get back to A/S at the half way point. Chris won 10 and 11 to go 2 up but Richard came back again to get it back to 1 heading to 17. Richard found trouble on the 17th and with Chris chipping it close and knocking in his 10ft putt, Chris won the match 2&1.

Peter Dixon (11) took on Paul Markham (7) in match 6. Pete went 2 up winning the 1st and 4th with Paul winning the 5th to get it back to 1. Pete then won the next four holes to put himself in a dominating position 5up at the turn. Paul birdied the 10th to win the hole but Pete was back to winning ways on the 11th with a par and with Pete close to the hole on 13 eyeing up his birdie, Paul conceded the hole giving Peter a 6&5 victory. Worth a mention that Peter was only 3 over par for this match.

In the overall standings, La Moye took an early lead after match 1 but Les Mielles then won match 2,3 and 6 to be 3-1 up. Matches 4&5 were both really close matches but La Moye showed their class to win both of them and level the match.

So it all went down to the last match where Bobby Stirling was playing Grant McGregor. Bobby won the 4th,5th and 7th to go 3 up then Grant won the 8th to finish the front 2 down. Grant then won 11 to get it back to one but Bobby won the next with a birdie on 12 to restore his two shot cushion. It was nip and tuck for the next few holes and Bobby got to the 17th dormie 2 and things were looking good for Les Mielles. After two great drives on 17, Grant played a wonderful shot into the green and Bobby missed the green and found the left bunker. Bobby wasnt able to get up and down and with Grant around 10ft after his first putt, he showed nerves of steal to hole it and take it down the 18th. Both players got their drvies away but both balls found the rough on the left. Grant could only move his ball 50 yards further and with Bobby finding the front third of the green, things were looking good. Grants third finished just short of the green leaving him a 50ft putt and in line with the match thus far, he dug deep and drained the putt for a par. This left Bobby needing 2 puts for the win where he came up a little short with his first putt and missed the next putt which took the match to the 19th (1st tee). Grant was up first and just came up short of the green and Bobby pulled his shot a little left but missed the bunker. Grant lagged up a putt for his second shot but came up a little short and Bobbys chip was a good one to around 5ft. Grant missed his putt for par and Bobby held his nerve to hole his putt and secure the match to les mielles.

The teams enjoyed fish and chips after the match and both captains said some words to finish off the day.

Big shout out to Mark Tostevin and his team, match was played in great spirit and it was great seeing both teams battle it out.

Les Mielles will now take on St Pierre Park in the CI Final.

Seniors Five Oaks Ironworks Trophy

The Seniors annual Five Oaks Ironworks Trophy competition was held on Monday 24th July 2023 and 34 Seniors turned out to compete on what turned out to be a sunny day.

This is always a high scoring competition and this year was no different .The top 3 won vouchers and in 3rd place with 43 points was 21 handicapper Ian Shepherd, just pipping him on countback with 23 points on his back 9 was 13 handicapper Jerry O’Connor. The all-time best score for this competition was recorded in 2022 by Mick Le Brocq who scored 47 points and this was matched this year by Martin De Gruchy who scored a fantastic 47 points off his 31 handicap, hopefully this will go some way towards reducing his handicap. Full results can be viewed on Howdidido.

Brian Hudson no longer sponsors the event but still generously donated 8 bottles of wine to be awarded to helpers & players who didn’t make the top spots. Sleeves of balls were also presented to players who were lucky enough to be selected using a random card method.

It was great to see so many players remaining for the presentation of the trophy which was made to Martin by Brian Hudson.

Les Mielles into 7s Jersey final

Les Mielles secured a 4.5 - 2.5 victory over Royal Jersey at Les Mielles on Sunday which takes them into the Jersey final where they will play La Moye.

The match against the Royal started on Sunday 18 June but due to the heavy mist that rolled in, the match had to be suspended with the majority of matches on the back 9.
With the match having to be played by the 25th, it was decided that the individual pairings would organise to finish their matches when they could during the week.

The first match to be concluded was Richard Wilson (15) who was taking on Simon Hayward (7). The match swung back and forth on the front nine with Richard going 2up after 2 and then getting pegged back to A/S by the 5th. Richard then won the next 3 holes to move to the back nine 3 up and kept it tight over the next few holes, using his shots well to win the match 3&2.

The next match to finish was Gareth Shergold (15) who was playing Paul Le Rougetel (9). Paul played a strong game and with his powerful hitting quickly went 2up but Gareth found his game and managed to keep it to 2 for the remainder of the front 9. Gareth pegged it back to 1 on the 11th, lost 13 but then won 14 to stay within 1 but a lovely shot by Paul on the 17th to 5ft gave him a birdie and 2&1 victory to level the match 1-1.

The remaining matches were all played on the Sunday and first up in the morning was Dale Clark (15) who was playing ex les mielles player Andy Dingle (15). Dale played a steady game and with Andy struggling on his return to les mielles, Dale was always up in the game building a 3 hole lead. On their return on Sunday, Dale won 11,12 and 13 to win his match 6&4.

James O'Hara (9) was next up playing against Peter Craggs (4). James took an early hold on the match going 4up after 7 holes but Peter fought back to get within 1 after the 14th. James held his nerve to win 15 and 16 and take the match 3&2.

This put Les Mielles 3-1 up overall and only needing one more point to win.

Peter Roscouet (9) was playing against another former player in Matt Hague (4). Peter started well winning the first with an eagle and also winning the next 2 holes to go 3 up but Matt came back strong and crossed over 1 up. The back 9 ebbed and flowed with both players playing some good golf but Matt was able to hold on and win the game 2&1 and close the overall match to just 1 point with 2 matches remaining.

Matt Cooper (8) was playing Harry Gibbon (3) who had just had a great run in the island championship so was in red hot form.Matt started strong going 3up early but Harry responded to reduce the match to 1up at the half way point. Both players won holes on the back 9, alternating the score between 1up and 2up. The match got to the 17th dormie 2 and with both players finding the green and 2 putting, Matt won the match 2&1 and victory to Les Mielles.

Allan Lawson was set to finish his game late afternoon but with the match decided both players agreed on the half.

Well done to everyone that has played in the 2 matches so far, an important coin toss awaits to see who gets home advantage in the final
